Web Design Quote problems

Recently found out that some less than honest website design companies quote or tender for business and if they don’t get the business they invoice the company for the website draft or work they do in attempting to win the quote to redesign / design the website. This example dialogue from a website design company demonstrates this:

[Website Design company] Sorry for the delay on the website example, I had a few problems with the layout and was chopping and changing the layout. Here’s the link to view the example online please view it in Google Chrome as this will present it properly. The final version would be viewed in all web browsers with no problem. Let me know what you think.

So that example is done and if you don’t love it I’ll start on another example. What did you think of the logo?

[Company needing Website] Sorry but this isn’t what we have in mind and we have agreed terms with Delicious Webdesign to redesign our website.

[Website Design company] I’m sorry to hear you don’t want to go ahead with the website redesign / update. The cost for the work I have done so far is £30. This is for the design I made and the work put into the second design so far

Viruses on your PC

Even with virus checkers installed on your machine you are at risk at picking up a virus on your PC / Laptop so therefore follow the golden rules of updating windows (ideally have the most recent version of windows on your machine) install and update your virus checkers and firewalls and never open emails or attachments from people you dont know (and be aware that people can use other peoples computers to send emails from their accounts pretending to be them).

This example statement from a website client shows the problems a virus can cause.

I was awaiting some reply to my last email regarding beavers website. I see that the client maybe providing some difficulty in regards to the website. From my prospective we have fulfilled the brief but cannot access my email,  as my defunct computer vista operating system decided it was going to become infected with a “virus” and make my desktop completely unworkable. After a day of going though regedit to remedy the problem I gave up and have reinstalled to factory condition. I am completely gutted again. I have Norton internet security, firewall, and firewall on the router with passwords. I tried a trojan remover but none of them worked. I tried some DOS stuff to no avail. Upshot is for me I’ve lost all my passwords that where stored in my browser hence I cant access my domain email account.

Website Ownership Disputes

Website Disputes are common and its important to keep the communication channels open and pay for services as the follow example conversation demonstrates

[New Website Owner] We are helping a company with a domain registered with you. The owner of the company gave up the company and now I am trying to gain access to various parts of their web presence; e-mail, DNS, website. Since the owner moved on the existing Webmaster has locked the company out of their e-mail and DNS, and is asking for unpaid bills to be paid before he provides access.

The domain name is in email title and the original technical/administration contact was myself – I am wondering how you can help us regain control of the zone? We paid for the renewals of the domains for the past few years and we still have access to his e-mail account so any communication can come through that account – unless the old Webmaster starts changing passwords again.

We are a dive centre in Thailand and we are able to provide details of ownership of the domain, and I would think you can check your records to see that changes have recently been changed by the Webmaster – we have asked him to provide copies of e-mails relating to the outstanding invoices, which he has been unable to do as yet.

[Webmaster] They have been disputing the outstanding invoices but we have provided them with details of all work done and the final invoice recently.

[Hosting Company] If the outstanding invoices are NOT related specifically to the domain name renewal, then you have no choice but to transfer ownership of the domain name back to the company. It is a breach of ICANN regulations to hold a domain name hostage against payment of outstanding amounts not directly related to the actual domain registration.

[Webmaster] They are directly related to website design, Seo and domain hosting / maintenance and renewals, they have been messing us around for ages now and just wish they would settle their invoice and would be happy to move on with this one. We had agreements in place regarding this work and the payments.
